If you want to give your watch a new look, changing the watch strap can be an easy and affordable way to do so. Here's how to change a watch strap:

  1. Determine the type of watch strap you have. There are many types, including leather, stainless steel, rubber and nylon. Each has its own method for removal and installation.

  2. Gather your tools. You will need a watch spring bar tool (unless you are using a quick-release strap) to remove your strap and a strap tool (if removing a steel strap) for removing strap links if necessary. If you do not have a spring bar tool then use a small screwdriver.

  3. To remove a watch strap with push pins (spring bars), use the spring bar removal tool to push in the spring bar from the side. Once the spring bar is pushed, it will pop out and you will be able to slide the strap off. If you don't have a spring bar tool, you can use a small screwdriver to push the spring bar out.

  4. To remove a steel strap, you will have to do the same. It is connected to the watch case with pushpins. So use your tool to push the pin on one side and then take it out so you can detach the pin on the other side. Need to remove strap links? Use a straptool to remove the pins that hold the links together. You may need to remove several links to get the right fit. Is your strap to large? Learn how to remove a strap link here.

  5. To install a new watch strap, slide it onto the watch and use the spring bar tool to push in the spring bars until they click into place. Make sure not to damage your watch!

  6. Adjust the watch strap to the right fit by adding or removing strap links if necessary.

By following these steps, you can change your watch strap easily without scratching your watch. If you don't have a spring bar tool, a small scred driver can be used as an alternative.  For watches with a quick-release mechanism, you can change the strap without any tools at all. With a little bit of practice, changing watch straps can become an easy DIY project!
