Citizen watch: How to change automatically summer or winter time

Geplaatst op 29-10-2025 door Marc Hut

Do you have one of those cool, fully radio-controlled Citizen watches that are always on time? But are you running into the problem that your watch doesn't quite do what you expect it to: automatically switch from summer time to winter time (or vice versa)? Then you should read this Watch News. Contrary to what you might expect, Citizen watches do not usually do this automatically! However, you can make the watch do this automatically! How you do this depends on the movement (calibre) in your watch.

Setting your watch for automatic summer/winter time

It is true that Citizen watches with radio-controlled movements can display the exact time and date and can also switch automatically to summer/winter time. But... By default, these movements are often set to manual adjustment of summer or winter time! In other words: you have to make the changes yourself. And that's not why you bought such a state-of-the-art Citizen watch!

Why your Citizen watch does not automatically change to summer/winter time

If your Citizen watch does not automatically change from winter time to summer time or from summer time to winter time, there may be several reasons for this. In any case, the watch must meet the following conditions in order to change summer/winter time itself:

  • It must be within the reception range of the transmitter (atomic clock).
  • It must be located in a part of the world that uses summer/winter time (daylight saving time: DST).
  • The watch must be sufficiently charged in the light.
  • The watch must be set to automatic summer time setting .
  • It must receive the signal from the transmitter (this is not possible in metal structures, reinforced concrete buildings or due to interference).

Citizen watch automatically changes summer and winter time

Depending on the model, a radio-controlled Citizen watch can change summer time and winter time completely automatically. To achieve this, we provide some brief instructions for the most popular Citizen calibres. So check which movement (calibre) is in your watch and then try the steps below!

Setting summer time (manually and automatically) on the most popular Citizen movements

Citizen with U680 (including Skyhawk) movement

  • Crown in position 1 → mode [RX-S]
  • Crown to position 2
  • Press button A to switch between:
    AU = automatic
    mA = manual
  • Select AU → crown back

Citizen with E660 movement

  • Crown in position 1 → mode [TME]
  • Crown to position 2
  • Turn crown to correct time zone
  • Press button B to switch:
    SMT ON = automatic switchover on
    SMT OFF = off
  • Set to SMT ON → return crown

Citizen with H800 / H804 / H820 movements

  • Crown to position 1
  • Turn to desired city (second hand)
  • Press and hold button A
  • 1/20 second hand points to:
    12:00 = automatic
    6:00 = manual
  • Set to 12:00 → return crown

Citizen H145 / H149 movements

  • Crown to position 1
  • Turn to desired city
  • Press button B to switch DST
  • Default automatic upon signal reception

Citizen with J250 movement

  • Crown out to 1st click
  • Turn to [TME] mode
  • Crown to 2nd click
  • Turn to time zone
  • Button A for DST:
    ON = summer,
    OFF = wintertime
    DST is manual per zone

Citizen with E660 / B740 / H610 / comparable radio models

  • Same principle: summer/winter time via time zone selection + DST ON
  • Often via button A or B depending on model
  • AU or SMT ON = automatic switchover

Summer/winter time: set your watch yourself with a manual!

We hope that this information will help you to set your Citizen watch correctly for the change from winter time to summer time and vice versa, of course. Be sure to consult the manual that came with your watch or that corresponds to the calibre in your watch. Don't have a manual for your watch? Check out the most popular watch manuals here.
