Keeping your watch glass scratch-free: how to do it

A watch is more than just an accessory; it is a piece of craftsmanship that you wear every day. The watch glass plays a crucial role in this, because a scratch can immediately ruin the appearance of your watch. Of course, you don't want that! Fortunately, there are smart ways to keep your watch glass looking good for a long time. In this watch news, you can read how to keep your watch glass scratch-free!

Why some glass is stronger than others

Not every watch glass is equally scratch-resistant. Sapphire glass is known as the most durable material. It is almost as hard as diamond and remains clear for years. Do you want to be sure of a scratch-free view of that beautiful dial? Then we recommend a watch with sapphire glass. They are slightly more expensive, but the extra cost is outweighed by the advantages of sapphire glass!

Mineral glass is cheaper and certainly not much worse, but it is more susceptible to scratches than sapphire glass. You will therefore need to be a little more careful with a watch with mineral glass than with a model with sapphire glass, to prevent the glass from being damaged. Because it is slightly less hard, this type of glass is also often used in diving watches that have to withstand extreme pressure. Sapphire glass could crack under high water pressure.

Watches with mineral glass with a sapphire coating are also common in the watch world. Brands such as Gc and TW Steel apply a sapphire coating to the mineral glass to make it more scratch-resistant. It is slightly better than standard mineral glass but, of course, not as hard as full sapphire glass.

Hardlex, or plastic, is widely used by Seiko, for example. The cheaper models in particular are fitted with plastic instead of real glass. It is flexible and will not crack easily, but it is much less scratch-resistant.

Corning Gorilla glass is also a plastic. Many smartphones are equipped with Corning Gorilla glass, and this type of material is also used in the watch industry. It is not as soft as Hardlex, but it is of course less scratch-resistant than mineral glass or sapphire glass.

Tips to prevent scratches

  • Store your watch in a watch box or pouch to prevent contact with keys or coins.
  • Do notwear your watch during sports or chores where impacts are unavoidable.
  • Clean the glass regularly with a soft microfibre cloth for long-lasting clarity.
  • Avoid chemical agents such as cleaning products that can damage the glass.
  • Choose sapphire glass if you want maximum scratch resistance and long-lasting enjoyment of your watch.
  • Wear your watch on your left wrist (or your least active wrist) to reduce the risk of knocks and scratches.

  • Avoid direct contact with hard surfaces; never place your watch face down on a table or desk.

  • Have your watch checked regularly by a watchmaker, who will also check that the glass and case are properly sealed.

  • Avoid extremely sandy environments; sand particles are very hard and can even damage sapphire glass.

What if a scratch does occur?

A superficial scratch on mineral glass can sometimes be polished away with special polishing paste. For deeper scratches or sapphire glass, replacement is usually the only solution. At WatchXL, you will find many watches with scratch-resistant sapphire glass, so you can easily avoid this problem.
