I’m sure you’ve been following the news over the past week – and we’re not talking about all the bad news, but about a historic NASA mission to the Moon: Artemis II. For the first time in over fifty years, NASA sent astronauts around the moon again. On board Orion were Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen. And just as the astronauts did back in the day during the Apollo missions, the Artemis astronauts also wore special watches on their wrists. One watch model in particular was clearly visible on the wrists of the lunar travellers: the Omega Speedmaster X-33 ada-digi edition. With this choice, NASA has once again opted for a watch with a serious spaceflight pedigree.

The Speedmaster X-33 is not a classic mechanical moon watch, but a modern instrument. The lightweight titanium case, the analogue and digital display, and functions such as a mission timer, alarm and chronograph make this model particularly suitable for use during a complex space flight. It is also notable that the watch can be worn comfortably over a spacesuit.
The Omega Speedmaster X-33 is not a classic mechanical watch but a space instrument. It is not merely a piece of jewellery but a genuinely essential tool for the astronauts. A quartz watch with a multifunctional battery-powered movement rather than a mechanical calibre. This watch is therefore specifically designed for use in space.
Alongside Omega, Breitling also played a prominent role in the Artemis II mission. Several crew members were spotted wearing a Breitling Cosmonaute B02 in the run-up to the mission. This model features a 24-hour dial, a case measuring approximately 41 mm, a hand-wound chronograph movement and a power reserve of around 70 hours. It is precisely this 24-hour display that makes particular sense in space, as day and night are far less intuitive there than on Earth.
A watch for a mission such as Artemis II must above all be reliable, easy to read and practical. During launch and re-entry, shocks, vibrations and high stress play a major role. Inside the capsule, rapid time recording, intuitive operation and a construction that is both light and strong are also essential.
Those who prefer the classic moon story will find the Bulova Lunar Pilot Moon Watch. This model is inspired by the watch worn by astronaut Dave Scott during Apollo 15 on the moon. A beautiful tribute to the golden age of space travel.

Artemis II demonstrates that a space watch is much more than a stylish accessory. On board, every second counts, and technology, comfort and absolute reliability must come together perfectly. And although a smartwatch or even an iPad offers far more possibilities, the robust and sturdy watches from Omega and Breitling are far better equipped to withstand the exceptional conditions in space.
That is precisely why watches from brands such as Omega and Breitling remain so fascinating, as they combine pure functionality with an exceptional piece of space history. From the modern journey around the moon with Artemis II to the legendary moonwalks of the Apollo era, one thing remains unchanged: in space, a good watch is still an instrument with character.
