Citizen celebrates 50 years of Eco-Drive with two PHOTON watches

Geplaatst op 23-03-2026 door Marc Hut

In 2026, Citizen is launching two special anniversary models to mark 50 years of Eco-Drive. Under the name Eco-Drive PHOTON, the brand is presenting two limited editions that are not only technically fascinating but, above all, immediately eye-catching. With these models, Citizen clearly demonstrates how far the brand has come since the launch of its first analogue light-powered watch in 1976.

A dial that plays with light

What makes these two new watches immediately special is the layered dial. Citizen opted for a construction featuring two metal plates with slits, through which a special structural colour film becomes visible. As a result, the appearance of the dial changes with the light. This ties in perfectly with the idea behind Eco-Drive, as light is central to the concept. The name PHOTON therefore refers to the smallest unit of light energy.

Two models with a look all of their own

The first version is the BJ6560-53W. This model features a refined silver-coloured case and strap made of Super Titanium, combined with a vibrant dial and a yellow seconds hand. The second variant, the BJ6569-59X, has an even bolder look with a black and gold-coloured case, a colourful dial and a purple seconds hand. Both watches are being released in a limited edition of 5,000 pieces worldwide per model.

New movement and modern specifications

Technically, they are also impressive. Both models are powered by the new Citizen calibre E036. This Eco-Drive movement runs for up to 365 days on a full charge. At 39.6 mm, the case size remains comfortably wearable, whilst the 9.9 mm case thickness ensures a sleek and modern profile on the wrist. Furthermore, the watches feature double-domed sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating, 5 bar water resistance and luminescent markers on the hands and hour markers.

Super Titanium: the logical choice

Citizen has not simply opted for titanium here, but for its own Super Titanium. This material is lightweight, scratch-resistant and comfortable to wear. For the BJ6560 53W, Citizen uses Duratect Titanium Carbide. The BJ6569 59X features a combination of Duratect DLC and Duratect amber yellow. This gives both watches not only a unique look, but also an exceptionally durable finish.

An anniversary model that really adds something

What stands out here is that Citizen hasn’t simply slapped an anniversary logo onto an existing model. The Eco-Drive PHOTON truly feels like a statement. The brand links the history of Eco-Drive to a futuristic design that immediately catches the eye. For enthusiasts of Japanese watchmaking, innovative dials and limited editions, these are undoubtedly two Citizen releases to keep an eye on. Citizen expects to launch these unique models in Europe in the autumn of 2026.
