Citizen is celebrating 50 years of light-powered watch technology with the Eco-Drive PHOTON: two individually numbered Limited Editions combining a new Eco-Drive movement, Super Titanium and an unusual multi-layer dial inspired by the science of light.
The BJ6560-53W and BJ6569-59X are each limited to 5,000 pieces worldwide and are scheduled for release in autumn 2026.
Rather than simply applying an anniversary logo to an existing watch, Citizen has developed a new design and Caliber E036 specifically around the idea that has driven Eco-Drive since 1976: using light as energy.
Eco-Drive has become one of the technologies most closely associated with Citizen watches.
The system converts natural or artificial light into electrical energy and stores surplus energy in a rechargeable power cell. This allows the watch to continue operating even when no light is available.
The PHOTON anniversary models deliberately place light at the centre of both the movement and the visual design.
The name is appropriate too. In physics, a photon is the quantum unit associated with electromagnetic radiation such as light. Citizen uses this concept as the starting point for one of its most unusual Eco-Drive dial constructions to date.

The two Citizen Eco-Drive PHOTON 50th Anniversary Limited Editions.
The dial is what immediately separates the Eco-Drive PHOTON from conventional Citizen watches.
Citizen says the design takes inspiration from the famous double-slit experiment associated with the scientific study of light.
The dial consists of two overlapping metal plates with ripple-like openings. Beneath these layers is a structural colour element that becomes visible through the slits.
Rather than producing its appearance using a conventional flat colour alone, microscopic structures interact with reflected light. As the viewing angle and lighting change, the dial can therefore show different colours and visual effects.
The concept is more than decorative. Light both creates the visual effect of the dial and provides the energy used by the Eco-Drive movement, tying the design directly to the technology being celebrated.
Additional slit details are incorporated into the dial cover, giving the face greater depth when viewed from different angles.
This makes the PHOTON particularly interesting for buyers who value unusual dial construction rather than simply a different colour applied to a familiar Citizen case.
Both PHOTON models share the same case dimensions, movement and core technical specifications. The main distinction is their finishing and visual character.
Best for: the cleaner and more understated interpretation. The silver-coloured Super Titanium case and bracelet use Duratect Titanium Carbide, while a bright yellow seconds hand provides a contrasting accent against the structural-colour dial.
Best for: buyers who want the more expressive Limited Edition. Citizen combines black and warm gold-toned surfaces with a purple seconds hand and the same light-reactive layered dial construction.
The BJ6569-59X uses a combination of Duratect DLC and Duratect Amber Yellow treatments, giving it a much more dramatic appearance than the silver BJ6560-53W.
Technically, however, neither model has an advantage over the other. The decision largely comes down to whether you prefer the cleaner titanium look or the stronger black-and-gold statement.
The PHOTON dial uses overlapping metal layers and structural colour effects.
The stated power reserve is approximately 365 days once the rechargeable power cell has been fully charged.
Citizen specifies an accuracy of approximately ±15 seconds per month.
The PHOTON is therefore not a radio-controlled or GPS-synchronised Citizen. Its emphasis lies on the new light-powered movement, extended power reserve and dial construction rather than external time correction.
