Citizen Eco-Drive and Super Titanium combine two technologies designed to make a watch easier to live with: light-powered quartz timekeeping and a lightweight titanium construction with a hardened, scratch-resistant surface.

Citizen launched its first analogue light-powered watch in 1976. In 2026, the company is therefore celebrating 50 years of the technology that eventually became known as Eco-Drive.
Light reaches a solar cell integrated into the watch and is converted into electrical energy. That energy powers the quartz movement and is also stored so the watch can continue running when no light is available.
The exact power reserve depends on the caliber. Some Eco-Drive watches can run for many months on a full charge, while advanced movements with power-saving modes can operate considerably longer.
Eco-Drive therefore does not mean that the watch contains no energy cell at all. It uses a rechargeable power cell, removing the need for the routine disposable battery changes associated with conventional quartz watches.

Titanium already has useful properties for watchmaking. It is lightweight, corrosion-resistant and generally gentle on the skin. Untreated titanium, however, can be relatively easy to scratch.
