The beige dial of the Zeppelin 8662MB-5 New Captain’s Line has a practical secret: it glows in the dark after absorbing light. And not just a little bit either: the entire dial glows! During the day, black numerals and hands provide contrast against the light background. The steel link bracelet gives this version a more robust look than a model with a leather strap. This makes it appealing to enthusiasts who want to combine classic aviation style with visible mechanical engineering and enhanced readability in low light.
The luminous surface makes the dark hands easier to see when the surroundings become dark. This is useful, for example, when you walk from daylight into a dark room. The brightness depends on the amount of light absorbed and then gradually fades. It is therefore a self-luminous dial, for which you do not need to press a button.
The small seconds hand indicates that the movement is running. In addition, the 24-hour display shows the same time over a full day, allowing you to distinguish between morning and evening. This display is not a separate world time function. As there is no date window, you do not need to adjust the calendar after a short month.
Beneath the dial is an automatic movement that winds its mainspring through movement whilst being worn. Manual winding via the crown is also possible. Once fully wound, it offers approximately 40 hours of power reserve without further movement. The glass caseback provides a view of the inner workings. It is manufactured in Ruhla, Germany. With a case thickness of 13 mm and a weight of approximately 160 grams, this is a substantial watch. The clasp features a quick-adjust mechanism for minor adjustments to the fit. K1 mineral glass and 5 bar water resistance (suitable for washing your hands or walking in the rain, but not for swimming) round off the design.
