What is a diving watch and what should you look for?

Geplaatst op 15-01-2026 door Marc Hut

What is a diving watch?

A diving watch is a watch designed to function reliably in and around water. With a real diving watch, you should at least be able to snorkel or go recreational diving. A real diver's watch is not only about water resistance, but also about safety and functionality: a sturdy case, good readability and often a diving bezel to keep track of your time underwater.

The difference between waterproof and truly suitable for diving

Many watches are water-resistant, but not every waterproof watch is automatically suitable for diving or even swimming. Water resistance is often indicated in ATM (atmospheres), bar or metres. This is a test under ideal conditions and does not say everything about practical use (such as jumping, temperature changes or intensive use). Always check the water resistance of your watch and what this means. It is important to know how waterproof your watch really is. You can read more information in How waterproof is your watch?

Water resistance explained: 3 ATM to 100 ATM in practice

Use this guideline to determine what you can and cannot do with your watch:

  • 3 ATM or 30 metres: Protected against splashes, such as when washing your hands, and brief exposure to water (e.g. rain). The watch is not suitable for showering, swimming or diving!
  • 5 ATM or 50 metres: Suitable for getting completely wet, showering, but not for swimming or diving.
  • 10 ATM or 100 metres: Suitable for swimming and snorkelling on the surface. Not suitable for jumping into the water or diving.
  • 20 ATM or 200 metres: Suitable for swimming and diving. Not suitable for deep-sea diving.
  • 100 ATM or 1000 metres: Suitable for deep-sea diving. View our diving and water sports watches

A waterproof watch cannot withstand hot water!

Even if a watch is waterproof, it cannot withstand hot water. Hot water from a tap, bath or sauna can deform the case components. This can cause the seals to lose their sealing effect. This is one of the most underestimated causes of waterproofing problems, especially in combination with steam and soap.

What should you look for when buying a diving watch?

The right choice depends on how you intend to use it: swimming, snorkelling, recreational diving or intensive water sports. Don't just look at the water resistance rating, but also at the build quality, the crown and the practical functions.

Features of a good diving watch

These are features you should look for in a model that you can wear with confidence in and around water:

  • Unidirectional diving bezel (safer: can only time shorter periods)
  • Screw-down crown and solid seal (gaskets)
  • Well-lit hands and excellent readability
  • For actual diving use: minimum 20 ATM/200 metres
  • A watch strap that can withstand salt and chlorine (steel or rubber) and that also fits when you are wearing a diving suit!

What is ISO 6425 and why is it important?

ISO 6425 is the well-known standard for diving watches. The advantage: extra assurance that the watch not only claims to be water-resistant, but has also been designed and tested with diving in mind (such as readability, safety and functional requirements). Read all about it in Diving watches with ISO 6425 standard: What does that mean?

Problems & maintenance: my watch is no longer waterproof

Water resistance is not a lifetime guarantee. Gaskets age, an impact can cause damage, or the crown may have been accidentally left open. Do you see condensation under the glass or are you unsure? Don't wait too long, as moisture can damage the movement and the dial. Do you have moisture or water in your watch? Is your watch no longer waterproof? Don't wait too long to do something about it!

Why do many people choose Citizen diving watches?
