Choosing between an automatic watch and Citizen Eco-Drive is mainly a choice between mechanical watchmaking and everyday convenience. Automatic watches appeal through their moving mechanical parts; Eco-Drive offers quartz accuracy powered by light.

Mechanical automatic watches can naturally gain or lose time. The acceptable deviation depends heavily on the specific movement, its regulation, position, temperature and condition.
It is therefore misleading to claim that every automatic watch loses or gains a fixed number of seconds per day. Some movements are adjusted very tightly, while others have a considerably wider manufacturer tolerance.
Eco-Drive uses quartz timekeeping, which is normally much more accurate than a conventional mechanical movement. Depending on the Citizen caliber, typical specifications may be expressed in seconds per month rather than seconds per day.

A fully charged Eco-Drive can normally continue running in darkness for months. Exact running time varies by caliber. The watch should still be exposed to light regularly to maintain a healthy charge level.
This makes Eco-Drive especially convenient if you rotate between several watches. An automatic can also work perfectly in a collection, but it may require resetting when you return to it after several days or weeks.
Both types of watch can last for many years, but neither should be described as completely maintenance-free.
A mechanical movement contains moving components and lubricants. Over time, servicing may be recommended depending on the manufacturer, movement and use.
Water-resistant automatic watches also contain seals that can age, just like quartz and Eco-Drive watches.
Eco-Drive avoids routine disposable battery changes, but it still contains a rechargeable cell and mechanical components such as the crown, seals, pushers and bracelet or strap.
Keeping an Eco-Drive permanently in darkness is not recommended. Citizen advises regular exposure to sufficient light so the stored charge does not become excessively depleted.
If minimal everyday attention is the priority, Eco-Drive has the advantage. If you enjoy maintaining and interacting with a mechanical watch, the additional involvement of an automatic may not feel like a disadvantage at all.
Specifications alone do not explain why people choose automatic watches.
An automatic movement provides an experience that Eco-Drive is not trying to replicate. Seeing a balance wheel oscillate or a rotor move through a display case back can be part of the pleasure of ownership.
Eco-Drive approaches watchmaking from the opposite direction. The technology is designed to make the energy supply as unobtrusive as possible. Light charges the watch while you simply wear it.
The movement, winding, power reserve and mechanical construction are part of the watch-wearing experience.
Light provides energy in the background, quartz provides accurate timekeeping and the wearer generally needs to intervene less often.
That difference in philosophy is more useful when choosing than asking which technology is objectively “better”.
Choose automatic. If the engineering inside the case is as important to you as the time on the dial, a mechanical movement gives you more to appreciate.
Choose Eco-Drive. Light charging and quartz accuracy make it extremely practical for work, travel and regular daily use.
Eco-Drive is usually easier. A charged model can remain running for months, whereas an automatic may stop after its power reserve expires.
Automatic can feel more special to someone interested in watches, although an Eco-Drive may be the smarter gift for a person who values practicality.
Choose by the individual watch, not simply the movement. Water resistance, construction and certification matter more than whether the movement is automatic or Eco-Drive.

This question does not have a simple one-word answer because sustainability depends on the complete product, how long it is used, materials, manufacturing and servicing.
Eco-Drive does have one clear practical advantage: regular disposable battery replacement is unnecessary. Citizen specifically developed light-powered technology to reduce dependence on conventional replacement batteries.
An automatic movement also avoids a disposable quartz battery and can remain serviceable for a very long time when properly maintained.
It is therefore more useful to consider durability and long-term use than to claim that one movement type is automatically “green” and the other is not.
If you want the movement itself to be part of the experience, choose automatic. You accept that the watch may stop after its power reserve has expired and that mechanical accuracy is different from quartz accuracy because that mechanical behaviour is part of its character.
If you mainly want the watch to be ready, accurate and easy to live with, Citizen Eco-Drive is difficult to beat. Keep it sufficiently exposed to light and the technology largely looks after its own energy supply.
There is also no reason you have to choose one technology permanently. Many watch enthusiasts own both: an automatic for the mechanical experience and an Eco-Drive for travel, work, outdoor use or days when convenience matters most.
