The Citizen Promaster Wave Tracker is a purpose-built Eco-Drive sailing watch with a yacht race timer, tide graph, high-definition MIP display, sapphire crystal and 20 bar water resistance.
Citizen created the Wave Tracker for yacht racing and marine sports, but its combination of practical outdoor functions, robust construction and analogue-digital design also makes it interesting as an everyday technical sports watch.
In this guide, we look at the four Wave Tracker models, explain Caliber U812 and show what the tide, race and sailing functions actually do.
Citizen introduced the latest Wave Tracker in 2026 as part of its professional Promaster line. The concept continues a Citizen tradition of creating watches for yacht racing that dates back to the Wind Jack introduced in 1985.
The modern Wave Tracker combines conventional analogue hands with a digital display and specialised functions for sailing and marine sports. That makes it very different from a conventional three-hand sports watch.

The Wave Tracker range consists of four references: JV3000-13E, JV3002-51E, JV3006-50L and JV3001-53E.
Technically, they share the same Caliber U812 platform, 42.4 mm case diameter, sapphire crystal and 20 bar water resistance. The main differences are therefore found in colour, finishing and strap or bracelet.
Best for: the most overtly sporty Wave Tracker. It combines a black dial with vivid orange details and a biomass-based polyurethane strap. The flexible strap makes this version especially logical for active marine and outdoor use.
Best for: buyers who want the Wave Tracker technology in a more conspicuous finish. Its light gold-tone stainless-steel case and bracelet give the technical sailing watch a more luxurious appearance.
Best for: a maritime look with a traditional stainless-steel bracelet. Its blue dial fits the marine character of the collection particularly well.
Best for: the most neutral everyday combination. The black dial and stainless-steel bracelet make it easier to wear away from the water while retaining all Wave Tracker functions.
At 42.4 mm, all four are substantial but not unusually large by modern sports-watch standards. They sit naturally within WatchXL's broader range of technical men's watches.
The Wave Tracker is a combination watch: conventional hands show the time while a digital MIP display handles the more data-heavy functions.
MIP stands for Memory-in-Pixel. In the Wave Tracker, Citizen uses the high-definition digital section to display information that would be difficult to communicate clearly with analogue hands alone.
Depending on the selected mode, the display can show information relating to race timing, tides, moon phases, sunrise and sunset, calendar functions, chronograph timing and other settings.
The hands and markers also use luminous material, while an LED light assists with reading the digital section in darker conditions.
This analogue-digital layout is an important part of the Wave Tracker's identity: it still looks and wears like a traditional Citizen sports watch, but can present considerably more information when required.
This is more specialised than a conventional chronograph.
In yacht racing, positioning the boat correctly before the starting signal is important. A countdown allows the crew to monitor the time remaining before the race begins. When that countdown reaches zero, the Wave Tracker automatically starts measuring elapsed race time.
Caliber U812 also includes a chronograph capable of measuring up to 24 hours in 1/100-second increments.

The second function that really separates the Wave Tracker from an ordinary sports chronograph is Tide Mode.
The watch can calculate and display predicted tide levels for a selected location. Citizen has programmed tidal information for 203 locations worldwide.
The display can show hourly tide-level predictions as a graph and indicate high and low tide times as well as changes in tide direction.
At the same time, the Wave Tracker can provide moon-phase information and sunrise and sunset times.
Those functions broaden its usefulness beyond yacht racing. Tide information can also be relevant for surfing, fishing and other activities where changing sea conditions matter.

The rotating bezel is functional rather than purely decorative. It carries point-of-sail indications that can help a sailor relate the course of the yacht to wind direction.
“Point of sail” describes the angle at which a sailing vessel is moving relative to the wind. Different positions include sailing close to the wind, reaching and running downwind.
Citizen designed the bezel to assist with angle and directional calculations and to help identify these sailing positions.
This is one of the clearest examples of the Wave Tracker being designed around actual sailing use rather than simply adopting a nautical aesthetic.
Eco-Drive converts natural or artificial light into electrical energy and stores it in a rechargeable power cell. This removes the need for routine disposable battery changes associated with a conventional quartz watch.
Citizen states that Caliber U812 can run for up to approximately three years on a full charge when the power-saving function is active.
The movement has a stated accuracy of approximately ±15 seconds per month when operating without external time correction.
U812 also incorporates a perpetual calendar, power-reserve indicator, light-level indicator, alarm and LED illumination alongside its race, tide and chronograph functions.

Every Wave Tracker in this generation is water-resistant to 20 bar or 200 metres and uses sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating.
The high water-resistance rating makes sense for a watch developed around marine sports, while sapphire crystal provides considerably greater scratch resistance than conventional mineral glass.
The anti-reflective treatment is also relevant on a watch that may regularly be used in bright outdoor conditions.

Despite its 20 bar rating and marine design, the Wave Tracker should not automatically be treated as a replacement for a purpose-built diving watch. If diving is your main activity, compare the dedicated Citizen diving watches and check the individual dive specifications.
The obvious target is the sailor. Race Mode, point-of-sail markings and tide information have genuine relevance in that environment.
But the Wave Tracker is broader than a yacht-racing instrument.
The race countdown, automatic stopwatch transition and point-of-sail bezel give the Wave Tracker its strongest specialist use case.
Tide predictions, moon-phase information and sunrise/sunset data can be useful even when you are not racing a yacht.
Eco-Drive, 20 bar water resistance, sapphire crystal and long autonomous operation make it an appealing technical watch for active use.
The combination of an analogue display, high-definition digital screen and newly developed U812 movement makes this one of the more technically unusual Citizen watches.
Choose the JV3000-13E if you want the most obviously sporty version and prefer the flexibility of a polyurethane strap.
Choose one of the steel-bracelet versions if you want the same marine functions in a watch that can also feel more substantial and conventional for everyday wear.
The blue JV3006-50L emphasises the maritime identity, while the black-and-steel JV3001-53E is arguably the easiest version to combine with everyday clothing. The gold-tone JV3002-51E makes the strongest visual statement.
Before ordering, also consider the 42.4 mm diameter, 13.9 mm thickness and the weight difference between the strap and bracelet versions.
The Wave Tracker is particularly compelling when you will actually use its marine functions. If you mainly want a simpler light-powered Citizen, the broader Citizen Eco-Drive collection may offer a cleaner and more affordable alternative.
The strongest part of the Wave Tracker is that its marine styling is backed up by actual marine functionality.
Caliber U812 combines Citizen Eco-Drive with yacht race timing, tide information, moon phase, sunrise and sunset data, a chronograph and a perpetual calendar. The 20 bar water resistance, sapphire crystal and robust Promaster construction support the same purpose.
That makes the Wave Tracker particularly interesting for sailors and water-sports enthusiasts, while its technical analogue-digital design can also appeal to anyone looking for an unusual and capable Citizen sports watch.
