A good Citizen diving watch is more than a waterproof sports watch. Promaster divers combine high water resistance with clear underwater readability, rotating dive bezels and, on many models, ISO 6425 certification and Citizen Eco-Drive.
The current Citizen range covers very different needs. You can choose a compact 36 mm diver, a versatile 40 mm steel model, a substantial 300-metre professional watch or an Aqualand with an electronic depth gauge.
Below are five Citizen dive watches currently worth comparing at WatchXL, each selected for a different type of wearer and use.
Citizen's Promaster Marine collection includes both relatively simple divers and specialised instruments. The most important specifications to compare are water resistance, ISO certification, bezel, readability, movement, crystal, case size and strap.
An ISO 6425-certified diving watch is specifically tested against requirements for diving watches. If you actually intend to dive with the watch, this is a more useful specification than simply choosing a watch because its dial looks nautical.

The Citizen BJ8057-17X Promaster Metropolitan Adventure is not a subtle watch.
Its stainless-steel case measures 48 mm across and approximately 18 mm high. Combined with the bold bezel and substantial rubber strap, the watch has the unmistakable tool-watch character associated with Citizen's largest professional divers.
The technical specification supports the appearance. The BJ8057-17X is ISO 6425 certified and water-resistant to 300 metres / 30 ATM.
The unidirectional diving bezel allows elapsed dive time to be monitored, while luminous hands and markers improve readability in low-light conditions.
Citizen uses its B873 Eco-Drive movement. It charges from light and offers approximately 180 days of running time after a full charge.
The watch uses mineral crystal rather than sapphire. For this model, we would choose it primarily because of its dimensions, 300-metre rating and distinctive Promaster construction rather than because of crystal type.
With a 48 mm diameter, it will not suit every wrist. If large watches are specifically what you enjoy, however, this is one of the more distinctive Citizen options currently available.
The Citizen BN0260-54L takes a completely different approach to the 48 mm BJ8057.
Its case is approximately 40 mm in diameter and 12 mm thick. That makes it much easier to wear as an everyday watch, particularly if you also want to combine your diver with normal work or casual clothing.
The blue dial and bezel give it a clear maritime character, while large luminous markers keep the display highly legible.
The BN0260-54L is rated to 200 metres / 20 ATM and uses a screw-down crown, screw-down case back and unidirectional diving bezel.
Inside is Citizen's E168 Eco-Drive movement with a stated power reserve of approximately 180 days.
The stainless-steel bracelet with safety clasp makes this model especially appealing if you prefer a metal bracelet to the rubber straps found on many dedicated divers.
For buyers who want one Citizen Promaster that can work both in and away from the water, this is one of the most balanced models in the current range.
The Citizen BN1024-01Z is another substantial professional Promaster, with a 46 mm case and 16 mm thickness.
Its specification moves a step beyond many conventional Eco-Drive divers.
The E365 movement provides approximately 365 days of power reserve after a full charge. For someone who rotates between several watches, that long reserve can be extremely practical.
The BN1024 is water-resistant to 300 metres / 30 ATM and uses anti-reflective sapphire crystal.
Citizen combines that with luminous hands and indexes, a unidirectional diving bezel and a water-resistant rubber strap.
This makes the BN1024 especially interesting if you want a technically serious dive watch but place value on scratch-resistant sapphire crystal as well.

The trade-off is size. At 46 mm and 16 mm thick, it deliberately feels like a professional sports watch rather than a compact everyday timepiece.
Diving watches do not have to be 45 or 48 mm across.
The Citizen EO2028-06L demonstrates the opposite approach with a case diameter of only 36 mm, a height of approximately 11.6 mm and a weight of around 65 grams.
Despite the compact size, this is still an ISO 6425-certified Promaster diver with 200-metre / 20 ATM water resistance.
It has luminous hands and indexes, a unidirectional diving bezel and a water-resistant rubber strap.
The E168 Eco-Drive movement offers approximately 180 days of power reserve after a full charge.
The EO2028 is listed by WatchXL as suitable for both men and women. That makes it a particularly useful option for smaller wrists and for buyers who simply prefer traditional, compact watch proportions.
If that is your preference, it is worth comparing the EO2028 with both the broader men's watch collection and WatchXL's women's watches.
The Citizen BN2038-01L Aqualand is the most specialised watch in this selection.
The large component on the left side of the 46 mm case is part of the depth-sensing system. Rather than simply helping you measure elapsed time, the watch can provide information about actual diving depth.
Functions include a depth gauge, maximum-depth information and decompression-related warning functionality.
The watch is ISO 6425 certified and water-resistant to 200 metres / 20 ATM. It also includes a diving bezel, prominent luminous hands and markers, and a rubber strap suitable for water use.
Citizen's J250 Eco-Drive movement offers approximately 330 days of running time after a full charge.
This model makes the most sense if you genuinely value the extra diving instrumentation. If you primarily want a clean everyday diver, the simpler BN0260 or one of Citizen's conventional Promaster Marine models may be a better fit.

Eco-Drive converts natural and artificial light into electrical energy and stores it in a rechargeable power cell. This means there is no routine disposable battery replacement.
That is particularly convenient in a water-resistant sports watch because there is less reason to open the case simply to replace a conventional quartz battery. It does not eliminate the need for normal servicing or periodic checks of seals and water resistance, however.
Power reserve varies considerably between calibers. The watches above range from approximately 180 days to around one year after a full charge.
