Citizen Eco-Drive watches

Citizen Eco-Drive watches powered by light

Citizen Eco-Drive watches convert natural and artificial light into energy, which is stored in a rechargeable power cell. This means no regular battery changes are required. At WatchXL you can compare Eco-Drive watches for men and women in a wide range of styles and specifications.

Eco-Drive is used across a large part of the Citizen collection, from slim everyday watches to chronographs, radio-controlled models, Super Titanium watches and professional Promaster watches. The technology is therefore not a single collection or design style: it is Citizen's proprietary light-powered movement technology.

How does Citizen Eco-Drive work?

A Citizen Eco-Drive watch captures light through the dial and converts it into electrical energy. Surplus energy is stored in a rechargeable cell so the watch can continue running when no light is available. Both sunlight and artificial indoor light can be used to charge an Eco-Drive watch.

In many models, the solar cell is positioned underneath a specially designed translucent dial. Citizen also uses ring-shaped solar cells in selected watches, which gives the designers more freedom when choosing dial materials and layouts. The solar technology is therefore normally integrated into the design rather than appearing as a visible solar panel.

No regular battery changes

One of the main advantages of Eco-Drive is that there is no need for the regular disposable battery changes associated with conventional quartz watches. The rechargeable cell stores energy produced from light and supplies the quartz movement when the watch is in darkness.

How long a Citizen Eco-Drive can run without additional light depends on the caliber and functions. Some models also include a power-saving function that reduces energy consumption when the watch remains in darkness for an extended period. Check the specifications and manual of the individual model for its exact power reserve and charging requirements.

Citizen Eco-Drive men's watches

Eco-Drive is particularly well represented among Citizen men's watches. The current WatchXL selection includes compact 38 and 40 mm models as well as larger sports, aviation and diving watches of 42, 44 mm and above.

This makes the technology suitable for very different types of wearer. You can choose a relatively understated three-hand watch for everyday use, a sporty chronograph, a radio-controlled model or a substantial Promaster designed for outdoor, aviation or marine use.

Citizen Eco-Drive women's watches

Citizen also uses Eco-Drive extensively in its women's watches. Current models at WatchXL include compact Eco-Drive watches around 29 and 31 mm as well as larger designs.

The advantage is the same as with the men's collection: the watch charges from available light without requiring routine battery replacement. When choosing a women's Eco-Drive watch, compare case diameter, bracelet or strap, crystal, water resistance and dial design alongside the movement.

Citizen Eco-Drive chronograph watches

Citizen combines Eco-Drive with chronograph functionality in many sporty models. A chronograph adds a stopwatch function to the regular time display and is usually recognisable by additional subdials and pushers on the side of the case.

The WatchXL range includes numerous Citizen Eco-Drive chronographs in different sizes, colours and materials. If the stopwatch function is important to you, compare these watches with our full selection of chronograph watches.

Eco-Drive in Citizen Promaster watches

Eco-Drive is also widely used within Citizen's professional Promaster range. Promaster Marine, Sky and Land models can combine light-powered technology with functions designed for diving, aviation and outdoor use.

Several Citizen Promaster Marine models use Eco-Drive, including watches designed for use in and around water. If water resistance and diving functionality are your main priorities, compare them with the broader WatchXL collection of dive watches.

Citizen Eco-Drive and Super Titanium

Eco-Drive describes the movement technology, while Super Titanium refers to Citizen's specially treated titanium material. The two technologies are combined in a number of Citizen watches.

This can be an attractive combination if you want light-powered timekeeping together with a watch that is noticeably lighter than a comparable stainless-steel model. Browse our titanium watches to compare Citizen Super Titanium Eco-Drive models with other titanium watches.

Eco-Drive, radio-controlled and advanced Citizen watches

Eco-Drive can also be combined with other Citizen technologies. Some models use radio-controlled timekeeping, while higher-specification watches may add functions such as world time, alarms, moon phases or satellite-based time correction.

This is why two Eco-Drive watches can be very different products despite sharing the same light-powered principle. Compare the individual specifications carefully if you need a particular function. Which Citizen Eco-Drive watch should you choose?

Start by considering how you intend to use the watch. For everyday wear, case size, weight and dial readability may be the main factors. For sports use, look at chronograph functions and water resistance. For diving, check the specific dive rating and certification. If low weight is important, a Super Titanium model may be worth considering.

Use the filters above to compare the current Citizen Eco-Drive watches by price, case size, colour, strap, crystal, water resistance and functions. This is more useful than choosing on Eco-Drive technology alone because every watch on this page already shares the same light-powered principle.

Frequently asked questions about Citizen Eco-Drive watches

Eco-Drive is Citizen's proprietary light-powered watch technology. It converts natural or artificial light into electrical energy and stores surplus energy in a rechargeable cell that powers the watch when no light is available.

Eco-Drive does not require the regular disposable battery changes associated with conventional quartz watches. It uses a rechargeable power cell that is continuously recharged by light. Like other watch components, the cell may eventually require professional service if its performance deteriorates.

Yes. Citizen Eco-Drive can convert both natural sunlight and artificial light into energy. Sunlight normally charges the watch more efficiently, while indoor light can also contribute to its power supply.

The power reserve varies between Eco-Drive calibers and models. Many can continue running for months after a full charge, while certain models have longer reserves or additional power-saving functions. Check the specifications or manual for the exact watch.

An Eco-Drive that has stopped may have an insufficient power reserve. Citizen recommends exposing the dial to direct sunlight and allowing it enough time to recharge. Charging time differs by model, so consult the instruction manual for the correct procedure.

No. Eco-Drive is an important part of Citizen's range, but Citizen also produces automatic, conventional quartz and other types of watches. The movement type is listed in the specifications of every watch at WatchXL.

Yes. Citizen produces Eco-Drive watches for both men and women. The WatchXL collection includes compact women's Eco-Drive models as well as a large selection of men's sports, chronograph and Promaster watches.
